Matthew Gilliham is Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space, leading a large scale program in space agriculture - specifically the growth and adaptation of plants to space environments and the production of novel bio products in plants to enable long-term space habitation, and to use these innovations to improve on Earth sustainability.

He is also Director of the Adelaide University Plant Synthetic Biology Australia node, which is a service facility for the production of genetically modified and gene edited plants for agricultural and biotechnological outcomes. His areas of research specialisation is crop plant nutrition and stress resilience with a focus on salinity and drought tolerance.

Matthew Gilliham is a Visiting Fellow at CAS LMU in December 2026 upon invitation of Prof. Dr. Silke Robatzek (LMU) in the context of the CAS Research Focus “Mission Space”.

On 9 December 2026 he will give a talk at the workshop “Life in Space”, part of the CAS lecture series “Mission Space”.
